Resumo | Forcing from bellow by atmospheric waves contributes to the day-to-day variability of the ionosphere. Several studies have shown that the nonlinear interaction between tides and planetary waves is one of the pathways for the vertical coupling between neutral and ionized atmosphere. Numerical studies have shown that the secondary waves arising from the nonlinear interaction between tides and planetary waves could significantly impact the ionosphere. In this study we used the MLT neutral wind data measured at São João do Cariri (7.4ºS, 36.5ºW) and ionospheric soundings by a digisonde installed at Fortaleza (3.9º, 38.4º) to investigate the presence and the induced variability by secondary waves in the Brazilian equatorial mesosphere-ionosphere system. In the MLT neutral wind we found evidences of the nonlinear interaction between a 3.5-day Kelvin wave and the diurnal tide. The interaction produced a 1.3-day secondary wave that was found to propagate upward with a relatively long vertical wavelength (~ 44 km), which may allow it to penetrate into the ionosphere. Correspondent 1.3-day variability was observed in the virtual height and critical frequency, which could be due to the secondary wave observed in the MLT. |
